Scottish Government have published their proposed categorisation for rivers in 2018 - subject to appeal and review.
Only 21 rivers are awarded category 1 status, with 27 category 2 and 123 in category 3 - there were 73 category 3 rivers in 2017, and 82 in 2016. This is a significant increase in rivers assessed as having a 60 per cent or less probability of reaching their conservation limit.
Advice for category 3 rivers is as follows: "Exploitation is unsustainable therefore management actions required to reduce exploitation for 1 year i.e. mandatory catch and release (all methods)."
